Christian Trumpeters Surround Local Abortion Clinic

by Elroy Willis -- November 9, 1998

FORT SMITH (EAP) -- A large group of Christians who oppose abortion surrounded the Westside Medical Center in Fort Smith yesterday in an attempt to crumble its walls by blowing their trumpets while marching around the perimeter of the building.

The trumpeting went on for thirty minutes until Fort Smith police arrived on the scene to dismantle the group of horn-blowing Christians.

"We got the idea from the Bible," said Adam Babbage, spokesman for the group. "In the Bible, a whole city was destroyed by the sounds of trumpets, so we figured that we should be able to destroy a single building with no problem."

Sarah Palmer, another member of the group, said they don't condone the killing of abortionists with guns like has happened in the past, so they came up with the trumpet blowing idea instead.

"We didn't want to harm anyone, we just wanted to destroy the building," said George Neyland, another member of the group. "We hoped that people would evacuate the building when it eventually began to collapse."

Each member of the group was fined $200 for disturbing the public, and awaits possible further charges of attempting to destroy private property.

"We're not quite sure what to do about these further charges," said Chris Patterson, owner of Westside Medical Center, in an interview earlier today.

"Everyone knows that the sound of trumpets can't actually destroy a building, but those people think it can, and their intention was to destroy my building, so I'm leaning towards pressing charges against each and every one of them," he said.

When asked for his comments on the situation, John Kraebel, district attorney of Fort Smith said "We're not sure that the charges would stick if they were actually pressed, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens."
